Heather Byers, Associate Director of Nursing, Barts Heart Centre, St. Bartholomew’s Hospital, Barts NHS Trust

Heather began her career in Edinburgh, specialising in adult critical care and cardiothoracic surgery, before relocating to London. Over the course of her career, she has worked across all nursing grades and has held a senior nurse leadership role at Barts for the past 20 years.

In 2019, she took on the position of Interim Associate Director of Nursing for Cardiac Surgery, Perioperative, and Respiratory Medicine at the Barts Heart Centre, securing the role permanently in 2021.

Heather has extensive experience managing services during times of organisational change, driving service improvements, and fostering innovation. She has led teams through some of the most challenging periods, including the successful integration of three cardiothoracic units and the provision of critical care services at Barts during the Covid-19 pandemic.

In 2021, alongside her ADON role, Heather was appointed Nurse Lead for Adult Critical Care in North East London, with her term extended in September 2024. In this role, she advocates for nursing within the North East London Adult Critical Care Operational Delivery Network (NEL ACC ODN), represents the region in the London Critical Care Programme working groups and the Critical Care National Nurse Lead Forum.
